Interview techniques

CAN YOU GET THAT JOB? YOU ARE A STAR!
Question: The STAR Technique (situation, task, action, results) refers to a tool you should consider using for developing answers to what type of interview questions?
  1. traditional/conventional
  2. psychological
  3. behavioural
  4. historical
Situation or
Task
Describe the situation that you were in or the task that you needed to accomplish. You must describe a specific event or situation, not a generalized description of what you have done in the past. Be sure to give enough detail for the interviewer to understand. This situation can be from a previous job, from a volunteer experience, or any relevant event.
Action you took Describe the action you took and be sure to keep the focus on you. Even if you are discussing a group project or effort, describe what you did -- not the efforts of the team. Don't state what you might do, state what you did.
Results you achieved What happened? How did the event end? What did you accomplish? What did you learn?

Can you handle being busy or rushed?
Use the S.T.A.R. technique to formulate your answer

  • S = Situation - describe a situation where you were busy or rushed
  • T = Task - what was the task you had to accomplish
  • A = Action - what did you do to accomplish the task
  • R = Results - what was the result or your actions

Situation

Sometimes our labs seemed to have more work than could be finished in the time allowed

Task

I had to find a way of completing the exercises in two hours.

Action

I made sure that I read and understood the exercises before going to class, and planned my lab work so it could be accomplished in the most time-efficient way.

Result

My partner and I were always able to finish the required work within class time.
Practice using the STAR technique to answer the following questions:

  • Give an example of how you have "multi-tasked" on the job or at school
  • Tell me about a conflict situation and how you resolved it
  • Give me an example of a problem you solved and the process you used to solve it
  • Give me an example of an idea you had and what you did with it
  • What types of situations put you under pressure, and how do you deal with pressure?
