A-level students 'choosing workplace ahead of university'

A study by the Daily Telegraph revealed that companies such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Laing O'Rourke and Grant Thornton have seen the number of applicants for A-level entry jobs soar.

Gaenor Bagley, head of people at PwC, told the newspaper that the firm has received 1,600 applications for 100 places.

"Students are being forced to look at different options for their future and university may not be the right solution. Anyone who has a genuine interest in pursuing a career in business has options," she stated.

A spokesman for Grant Thornton added that the calibre of applicants for the company's entry-level jobs has risen considerably.

Tanya de Grunwald, founder of graduatefog.co.uk, said recently that many graduates feel their degree has not helped them get ahead when it comes to forging a successful career.
