Young people feel benefits of vocational training
Zoe O'Reilly and Richard Breach-Green told an event for recruitment industry workers about their time on the Right Futures Programme operated by Twin Employment & Training.
Ms O'Reilly said: "I joined the right futures pre-apprenticeship programme in March 2012. I learnt how to job search effectively, I had produce a CV and a cover letter to help with my job applications.
"I enjoyed it because I have plenty of support from my Employment Services Advisors. They helped me produce a good standard of CV, they helped me build my confidence for interviews, they used example questions and they conducted a mock interview for practice.
"Some people might think going on to a programme like the pre-apprenticeship programme would be quite boring and annoying and that was what I thought I would be facing. However, when I did join I was welcomed and treated with respect and like an adult.
"It made me feel like I could easily find a job because of the confidence they had in me."
The comments from Ms O'Reilly and Mr Breach-Green were made at Twin's quarterly partnership event for professionals in the recruitment sector.
Almost 100 representatives of organisations that provide education, training or recruitment services were present at Twin's Lewisham HQ on 27th September.
Delegates at the event were treated to presentations about Twin's programmes offering apprenticeships and other vocational training methods to young people seeking work.
A series of presentations were also made by organisations like the South East London Chamber of Commerce and HMRC's Business Education & Support Division.
Ms O'Reilly added: "I feel that the apprenticeship will help me as I have gained a lot of experience in my role and I am a lot more confident now.
It will also give me a qualification at the end, and where I didn't do well at school, the experience I am getting at Twin will look great on my CV, although I'm not looking to leave anyway."
Beth O'Shea, Director of Twin Employment & Training, commented: "The experiences Zoe and Richard shared at the partnership event showed that there was hope for young people seeking work despite all the negative reports in the media about the number of jobs available."
