Earlier this year, Darren Clarke received not one, but two learner awards in recognition of his commitment and progress on the Routeway to Retail course. For someone who began with little confidence and hadn’t worked in over two years, the awards marked an incredible personal milestone.

“To hear my name for Learner of the Year was a shock and overwhelming - but I was very proud of myself,”

Darren was referred to Twin Group by education and social welfare provider Whitehead-Ross, having previously been on the Restart scheme. At the time, he had been out of work for more than two years and openly shared that he lives with autism and depression. Despite his initial nerves and low confidence, Darren enrolled onto the Routeway to Retail programme with quiet determination.  

With support from his tutor and engagement consultant, Darren gradually found his rhythm. Daily one-to-one sessions helped him break down the material and build understanding, while regular encouragement helped ease his anxiety and self-doubt. He began to see his own potential and stayed on top of his coursework, producing consistently strong assignments.  

“I learned that I can do more than I thought I could,” Darren reflected. “I should have more confidence in myself.”  

The confidence he built throughout the course has already translated into action. Darren has secured his first job interview for a support worker role, a step he hopes will allow him to use his own experiences to help others. He’s also looking to join further courses to continue building his skillset and CV.  

Darren’s story is a reminder that success doesn’t always come quickly or easily, but with the right environment, belief, and support, change is possible.
