When Esther joined the Restart Scheme in July 2025, she was determined to build a better future for herself and her young daughter. As a single mother with limited English, she faced several challenges, including finding suitable employment, balancing childcare responsibilities, and living in accommodation affected by severe mould.

From the outset, Esther showed resilience and a willingness to engage with every opportunity. Working closely with her Restart Adviser, she received tailored support to build her confidence, create a professional CV, prepare for interviews, and identify roles that would fit around her family commitments. She also attended local job fairs to connect with employers and explore opportunities.
Recognising that employment wasn't Esther's only challenge, the team also supported her in addressing her housing situation. With their support, she was successfully moved into safer accommodation, providing a more stable home environment for both her and her daughter.
In February 2026, Esther secured full-time employment. Her positive attitude and strong work ethic quickly made an impression, and her employer began discussing opportunities for future progression.
Shortly after starting work, Esther faced another challenge when the school holidays disrupted her childcare arrangements. As suitable holiday provision for her daughter with autism proved difficult to find, the Restart team continued to work with Esther to explore solutions. Through supportive conversations, she felt encouraged to reconnect with her daughter's father, who agreed to care for their daughter while Esther was at work.
This helped Esther remain in employment while also improving communication between both parents. Esther later shared that her daughter became more settled, her communication improved, and family routines became easier to manage.
Today, Esther continues to thrive in work and regularly visits the Restart office to share updates with the team. She describes the staff as "family" and appreciates the encouragement and practical support she received throughout her journey.
Esther’s story is a powerful example of how tailored, person-centred support can transform lives far beyond employment alone. Through trust, persistence and collaborative problem-solving, barriers that once seemed impossible became opportunities for growth, stability and renewed hope for an entire family.
