After a successful career in sales and business development, Bernard Abang found himself at a crossroads. In May 2023, his role as Head of Memberships and Partnerships at the African Business Coalition for Health came to an end. With years of experience under his belt and a background in law, Bernard knew he was ready for something new, a role where he could use his skills differently and make a meaningful impact.

In February 2024, Bernard reached out to the National Careers Service for support. From the start, the service helped him explore his options in a structured, focused way. With the guidance of a dedicated careers adviser, Bernard began to reflect on his transferable skills and explore potential career paths.

The idea of becoming an Employment Consultant stood out. It was a role that brought together Bernard’s strengths in client relationships, leadership, and communication, while allowing him to help others move forward in their own careers. The National Careers Service worked with Bernard to make this goal a reality.

Together, they built a personalised career plan that included a full skills assessment, tailored CV support, and targeted job search strategies. Bernard also received interview coaching focused on the employment support sector. The support helped him not only build a compelling application but also approach interviews with confidence and clarity.

In March 2025, Bernard secured a role as an Employment Consultant with us! The role marked an exciting step forward and allowed Bernard to apply his professional background in a new and purposeful way.

The support he received from the National Careers Service played a key part in that transition. By helping him recognise the value of his experience and guiding him through the practical steps of a career change, the service gave Bernard the tools he needed to take the next step.

Bernard’s story is a reminder that a career shift doesn’t mean starting over. With the right support, it can be a chance to grow in a new direction and use your experience to make a difference.
