For Weyni Weidu, her work Journey in the UK meant adapting to a new culture, understanding a different employment landscape, and developing the English language skills needed to pursue her career ambitions.
As an unemployed jobseeker, Weyni was referred to the Restart programme through her local Jobcentre. The programme supports individuals who are out of work by helping them develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to return to employment. While an initial assessment showed strong potential, she lacked experience of the UK education system and was still building confidence in using English in everyday and professional situations.
Weyni faced an important challenge: although her English skills were developing well, they were not yet at the level required to access the types of employment opportunities she was capable of achieving. She also had limited knowledge of the UK job market and the steps involved in securing employment.
To support her journey into work, Weyni was enrolled on Twin Training's four-week intensive ESOL for Work course, delivered by ESOL Tutor Colin Danson in Leicester.
Designed specifically for learners preparing for employment, the course combines English language development with workplace skills, helping participants build the confidence needed to navigate the employment market successfully. Some of the topics include workplace communication, following instructions, understanding job advertisements, completing application forms, requesting information about vacancies, and developing effective interview techniques.
Weyni embraced every opportunity available to her. As the course progressed, her confidence grew significantly, and she became an active and valued member of the class.
By the end of the programme, the transformation was clear. Weyni was communicating more confidently, participating fully in class activities, and demonstrating a much stronger understanding of employment expectations in the UK. Participants of the course receive a certificate of attendance that highlights the skills and knowledge developed during the programme, providing valuable evidence they can show to prospective employers or future educational institutions, demonstrating their commitment to learning and personal development.
Reflecting on her experience, Weyni said:
"I enjoyed this course because I met new friends and I liked the tutor because his method of teaching is nice. My plan for the future is to search for a job and to continue ESOL classes."
The journey does not end here. Weyni continues to receive support from her Employment Coach as she searches for work and has already been introduced to progression opportunities that will allow her to continue developing her English language skills.
Her story demonstrates how the right English language support, tailored employability training, and a positive learning environment can help individuals build the confidence needed to take the next step towards employment and future success.
